Warnings and regulations for monks

The Holy Synod approved the following recommendations that were mentioned in the report of the Synodal Committee for Monasteries Affairs:

  1. The warning to each applicant of monasticism is that he will not be given permission to marry in the Coptic Orthodox Church if he breaks the vow of monasticism after his monasticism. With this, he must test himself well, and make sure of the final determination to continue with a celibate life. He is informed that the Church does not allow the correction of the status of a monk who breaks the vow of monasticism and marries from another sect. (Footnote: That is, it is not allowed to correct the invalidity of this marriage.)
  2. For monks who live in monasteries: the monastery uses cars, registers them and licenses them in the name of the monastery. A monk may not have a private car. The monastery uses telephones of all kinds, but the monk may not install a phone in his cell, nor acquire a mobile phone. The monastery uses the computer for its general works, but the monk may not use a private computer in his cell.
  3. The financial liability of the applicant for monasticism is studied.
  4. The importance of examining the position of the monastic applicant in relation to conscription [army enlistment] is repeated, and making the necessary medical examinations before entering the monastery.
  5. Add the phrase "commitment to a chaste life" in the vow of the new monk, as the vow that was previously made contains nothing about commitment to the life of chastity."
